Mental Health Ministry
Offering Hope and Healing
The Catholic Mental Health Ministry in the Diocese of Joliet exists to bring Christ’s compassion, presence, and hope to anyone facing mental or emotional challenges. We recognize that many individuals and families in our parishes are carrying heavy burdens—stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, loneliness, and more. No one should have to face these struggles alone. Our ministry works to ensure that every parish is a place where people feel seen, supported, and accompanied on their journey toward healing.
What We Do
- Build Mental Health Awareness in Parishes
We help parish communities understand mental health from a Catholic perspective—reducing stigma, encouraging compassion, and promoting a culture where it’s safe to talk about emotional struggles. - Train Parish Leaders and Volunteers
We equip clergy, staff, and lay volunteers with practical tools to recognize when someone is struggling and to respond with Christ centered care, appropriate boundaries, and informed referrals. We also provide workshops, speakers, and resources that integrate faith, psychology, and pastoral care so parishioners can better understand mental health and support one another. - Connect People With Help
While we do not provide clinical counseling, we guide individuals toward trustworthy Catholic sensitive mental health professionals, support groups, and community resources. - Create Opportunities for Prayer and Spiritual Support
We encourage parishes to offer prayer services, support gatherings, and spiritual accompaniment for those seeking God’s peace in times of emotional difficulty. In short: we help parishes become places of hope, understanding, and support for anyone experiencing mental or emotional challenges.
Why it Matters
Mental health struggles touch nearly every family. When the Church responds with compassion and understanding, people rediscover that they are not alone and that God walks with them in their suffering. Your presence, your compassion, and your willingness to learn can make a real difference in the life of someone who is struggling.
